The Sweet Simplicity of Raw Honey: A Biblical Food That Healed My Gut

On my gut health journey, one thing became very clear: healing doesn’t have to be complicated. In fact, when I went back to the basics and started incorporating biblical foods, I noticed my gut began to regulate in ways that no trendy diet or supplement ever could.

One of those powerful biblical foods is raw honey.

For a long time, sugar was one of the biggest disruptors in my gut. It caused inflammation, fed the wrong bacteria, and left me with cravings that only made things worse. When I started using raw honey as a substitute for processed sugar, everything began to shift. Not only did it satisfy my sweet tooth, but it also nourished my body in a way refined sugar never could.

I find it beautiful that Scripture itself highlights honey. The Bible describes the Promised Land as “a land flowing with milk and honey.” (Exodus 3:8) — a picture of abundance, restoration, and God’s provision through pure, life-giving foods.

In ancient times, milk and honey were pure, unprocessed, and deeply nourishing.

Today, most grocery store milk isn’t truly milk, and much of the honey isn’t real honey. It’s no wonder inflammation, autoimmune disorders, and chronic illness are on the rise. We’ve traded what God made pure for what man has processed.

But here’s the truth: God already gave us a roadmap for health, healing, and longevity. People in biblical times lived for hundreds of years, not because of fad diets or endless supplements, but because they lived simply — eating foods the way God created them. This wasn’t just about physical health; it was about holy living. God’s design for food was always meant to restore not only our bodies but also our minds and spirits.

This conviction is one of the reasons I started Holistic Living: a kingdom-minded wellness business that helps people return to God’s blueprint for health. I want to help others see food differently — not as complicated, trendy, or burdensome — but as simple, nourishing, and even joyful.

Raw honey has become one of my favorite ways to experience that joy. A few ways I love to use it:

  • Raw Milk Ice Cream & Peach Cobbler – swapping sugar for raw honey makes these desserts guilt-free and gut-friendly. (Check out my raw milk ice cream recipe here)

  • Facial Masks – I’ve actually ditched chemical-filled face masks and use raw honey instead. My skin has never looked better!

  • Morning Coffee – my “cup of heaven” is organic coffee with a tablespoon of raw honey and a splash of raw milk (always after breakfast so I don’t spike my blood sugar and promote proper digestion regulation).

  • Cooking & Baking – from glazes to baked goods, it’s an easy way to enjoy sweetness without the crash.

If you want to try something new, here’s one of my favorite simple recipes:

Roasted Honey-Glazed Squash Recipe 🍯✨

  • 1 medium squash, sliced

  • Half an onion (A great source of prebiotics)

  • 1–2 tbsp raw honey

  • 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil or organic grass fed butter

  • Pinch of sea salt (whole mineral salt isn't bad you! It actually can help hydrate you)

Roast squash slices at 400°F for 25–30 minutes. In the last 5 minutes, drizzle with raw honey and let it caramelize to perfection!

Honey-Glazed Squash & Onion Skillet

This cozy skillet is a delicious way to bring raw honey into your meals. Sweet squash slices and caramelized onion are lightly glazed with honey for a nourishing, simple side dish.

Ingredients:

  • 1 medium squash (any kind you have — delicata, acorn, butternut, kabocha, etc.), thinly sliced (skin on, no need to peel or seed if using softer squash)

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter

  • 1–2 tbsp raw honey

  • Pinch of sea salt & black pepper

  • Optional: fresh rosemary or thyme

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat.

  2. Add the onion slices and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden.

  3. Add the squash slices, season with salt and pepper, and cook for 12–15 minutes until tender.

  4. Drizzle raw honey over the squash and onions, tossing gently to coat. Cook another 3–5 minutes until caramelized.

  5. Sprinkle with fresh herbs if desired and serve warm.

I encourage you to enjoy at least a teaspoon of raw honey today — whether it’s in your morning beverage, a special treat, or even as a simple spoonful. Let it remind you that God’s design for health is good, simple, and sweet.
